If your building has an elevator, frequent cleaning of the elevator buttons is warranted. The number of bacteria present on an elevator button is almost 40 times higher than on a public toilet seat, according to new findings. Among the common bacteria likely to be found are E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). ( Read more) |

Intercell AG has started Phase I clinical trials with a vaccine (IC84) to prevent C. difficle. Phase I trials will
be testing healthy adults aged 18-65 years and then healthy elderly above the age of 65 years. Eventually community prophylaxis for the elderly and prophylaxis in at risk hospitalized patients may be possible indications for vaccination. ( Read more) |

A study by Rhode Island Hospital found that MRSA is more likely to be found in the nares than under the arms, the groin, or the perineum. They also found that high levels of MRSA in the nares usually indicated MRSA in the other areas. (Read more) |
Bath Basins Potential Source of Infection: Researchers presented a study conducted at US and Canadian hospitals on bath basins and discovered that 63.3% were contaminated.Even though the basins looked clean, the basins were colonized with VRE (34.6%), gram-negative bacilli (43.6%) and 35.5% colonized with MRSA. NEW DRUG FOR TREATING C-DIFF! Fidaxomicin , a bacteriocidal drug, has been noted to have some advantages over Vancomycin with respect to the development of resistant organisms over time and may potentially change the relapse rate. Fidaxomcin kills C-Diff rather than inhibit as with Vancomycin. It will be a twice a day regimen for 10 days. (Read more)
Face masks worn by patients infected with tuberculosis (TB) may be able to significantly cut transmission rates to non-infected patients, according to a new study by researchers from the U.S. and South Africa. They found that when infectious patients with MDR-TB wore masks that the transmission rate was decreased by 50%. (Read more)

Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin has found a possible link between norovirus and food allergies. Mice infected with norovirus were fed egg protein and the researchers are looking for an IgE response to signify an allergic reaction. Every 3 minutes a food allergy sends a child to the ER! A recent study in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Environmental Science and Technology showed that vacuum
cleaners can increase levels of very small dust particles and bacteria in indoor spaces. It was found they can contribute to indoor air pollution by releasing into the air bacteria and dust that can spread infection and trigger allergies. (Read more)
C Diff Report released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality (AHRQ) shows that hospital stays involving Clostridium difficile infections increased
300 percent between 1993 and 2008, but the number of hospital stays leveled off between 2008
